Spring in the Rockies

THE SECRET MAGIC OF SPRING

Each heliski season tells its own story. Storm cycles come and go, snowpacks build, and guests arrive from around the world to experience the Canadian Rockies at their best.

By the time late March arrives, the rhythm of winter has settled in and the alpine terrain that has been quietly filling in all season is ready to shine. For those fortunate enough to experience it, spring in the Rockies often becomes a favourite chapter of the year.

In fact, it's one of heliskiing's best-kept secret. While many skiers focus on chasing mid-winter storms, late March often reveals expansive alpine terrain, incredible coverage, and long, flowing runs framed by sweeping mountain vistas.

Scroll on for 5 excellent reasons we encourage guests to discover spring heliskiiing at Mica, whether this season or winters to come.

#1 - THE ALPINE OPENS WIDE UP.

Throughout the winter, storms stack layer upon layer of snow across the high glaciers and alpine bowls of the Canadian Rockies. Much of this terrain quietly fills in over months, waiting for the right conditions to reveal its full potential.

By late March, that moment often arrives.

Suddenly, vast alpine landscapes that were gradually building all winter come into play. Broad glacier runs stretch for thousands of vertical feet, and long, rolling lines link together in ways that feel expansive and fluid. Where mid-winter skiing can sometimes feel intimate and sheltered, spring often brings a sense of scale. And, the feeling of truly moving through big mountain terrain is indescribably awe-inspiring.

#2 - LONGER DAYS. MORE TIME IN THE MOUNTAINS.

One of the most noticeable shifts in late March is the return of long alpine days.

With the sun rising earlier and setting later, the rhythm of heliskiing naturally opens up. Mornings still begin with the excitement of the helicopter lifting into the mountains, but there’s less urgency in the day’s pace.

Guests can savour moments that make the experience so memorable; a quiet pause on a ridge overlooking endless peaks, a longer lunch, or simply the satisfaction of watching the helicopter lift off again after another remarkable run.

More daylight simply means more time to enjoy the mountains.

#3 - A DEEP MATURE SNOWPACK.

By spring, the snowpack in the Rockies has had months to settle, strengthen, and deepen.

Storms throughout the winter gradually build a foundation that often results in excellent coverage across alpine terrain. For guides and guests alike, this can translate into the ability to explore larger features and expansive mountain zones that require a robust base of snow.

It’s one of the reasons many experienced heliskiers quietly look forward to this time of year. The mountains feel ready.

#4 - THE LODGE ENERGY SHIFTS.

Spring trips often carry a distinct celebratory atmosphere back at the lodge.

After big days in the mountains, guests linger longer outside if the weather allows, finally feeling the sun on our faces, stories flowing easily, and the shared satisfaction of another memorable day of skiing.

Sometimes the kitchen team fires up a BBQ in the field for lunch in the alpine. Other afternoons end around the fire pit with a drink in hand and the glow of the surrounding peaks catching the evening light as the we watch the sun set across the lake behind the Monashee mountains.

There’s a subtle sense that everyone (our team and guests) is savouring the season’s final chapter together.

#5 - THE MOUNTAINS FEEL WIDE OPEN.

Late March brings another quiet advantage.

Many skiers and boarders, particularly our guests from the south, have already begun shifting their attention toward other spring pursuits, leaving the vast terrain of the Canadian Rockies feeling especially expansive.

For heliskiers, that can mean a unique sense of space and freedom across an enormous landscape of glaciers, bowls, and tree runs. It’s a time when the mountains feel calm, confident, and beautifully open.
