Wrangle the Chute is one of the most unique big mountain backcountry competitions in the world. It takes place just outside of Golden, British Columbia at the Kicking Horse resort. The two day competition features your standard big mountain racing lines, complete with a manicured park jump at the bottom. One of the things that makes Wrangle the Chute unique is that it also includes a bucking bronco ride at the end. That is, not only do skiers and riders have to show big mountain skiing skills, plus jump off a big kicker at the bottom, they also have survive a bucking bronco ride on a fake horse suspended between two snow cats. The event is a two day affair, with each skier and snowboarder getting one run on each day to show off their skills. The skiing and riding was absolutely fantastic, with several athletes hitting massive cliff lines that were more than 60ft. The level of skiing and snowboarding was incredibly high, making Wrangle the Chute one of the top big mountain freeride events in the world. Matthew Montadon took first place in the men's competition, while Wendy Burns led the women.
Wrangle the Chute is yet another example of just how much big mountain skiing and the backcountry appeal to skiers and snowboarders these days.
